What a worm gear set is (worm garari kya hoti hai)
A worm gear drive has two parts. The worm is a hardened steel shaft with a thread cut along it, like a screw. The worm wheel is a gear whose teeth are curved to wrap around the worm thread. Hindi mein log isko worm garari ya worm wheel aur worm shaft ka set kehte hain.
As the worm turns, the thread pushes the wheel teeth sideways. The wheel moves one tooth for each start of the thread per revolution of the worm. A single start worm driving a 50 tooth wheel gives a 50:1 reduction in one mesh, in a housing far smaller than a multi stage spur gearbox of the same ratio. That is why worm drives are used in lifts, hoists, conveyors, sugar mill drives, textile machines and machine tools.
Worm gear ratios we manufacture
Most of the worm sets we make fall between 5:1 and 100:1. Below about 5:1 the thread angle becomes steep and other gear types are a better choice. Above 100:1 efficiency drops sharply and a two stage arrangement is usually more practical.
The ratio is set by two numbers: teeth on the wheel and starts on the worm.
- Single start worm with a 40 tooth wheel: 40:1
- Double start worm with the same wheel: 20:1
- Four start worm with the same wheel: 10:1
Single start worms are usually self locking, so the wheel cannot drive the worm backwards. Multi start worms are more efficient but not self locking. Ratio batayein ya purana set bhejein, hum same ratio ka naya set bana denge.
Worm gear material: phosphor bronze wheel, hardened ground worm
For the worm we use case hardening alloy steel such as EN353, EN36 or 20MnCr5, carburised, hardened to 55 to 60 HRC and then ground on the thread. Grinding after hardening matters: heat treatment always distorts the thread a little and grinding corrects it. An unground hardened worm runs noisier and wears its wheel faster.
For the worm wheel we use phosphor bronze in most cases. Bronze is deliberately softer than the steel worm. It takes the sliding contact, holds oil in its surface, and is the part designed to wear. Replacing a bronze wheel after years of service is far cheaper than replacing a ground steel worm.
For light duty or intermittent use we also make cast iron worm wheels, which cost less but will not match bronze for life under continuous duty. We will tell you which one suits your application instead of quoting the cheaper option by default.
Why worm gearboxes run warm
The worm thread slides along the wheel tooth instead of rolling on it. Sliding means friction, and friction means heat. A well made worm set at a moderate ratio is 85 to 90 percent efficient; at very high ratios it can fall below 50 percent. This is geometry, not a defect, and it is why worm gearboxes have cooling fins and why oil grade matters. If a worm gearbox in your plant is too hot to touch, check oil level and grade first, then check whether the duty has increased since the box was specified.
How we manufacture worm gears in Ludhiana
- Material selection: certified steel and bronze, mill test certificates on request.
- Turning: worm blank and wheel blank turned to size, bore and keyway machined to drawing.
- Thread and tooth cutting: the worm thread is cut on a lathe or thread milling machine; the wheel teeth are hobbed with a hob matched to the worm. This matching is why worm and wheel are always made together as a pair.
- Heat treatment: the worm is carburised and hardened to a controlled case depth.
- Grinding: the hardened worm thread is ground to the finished profile.
- Assembly check: the pair is assembled at the correct centre distance, backlash is measured and the contact pattern is checked with marking compound before dispatch.
